Specifying size, material or compatibility accurately leads to fewer returns, working filters and better search visibility. Here is what to focus on.
What are product attributes?
Product attributes (also called properties or specifications) are the measurable, comparable characteristics of a product: size, weight, colour, material, power, capacity, compatibility, warranty. The description persuades, while the attributes answer the shopper's specific questions: "Will it fit?", "Does it work with my device?", "Is it washable?".
Why do accurate attributes matter?
1. Shoppers can make a decision
Online, shoppers cannot pick up the product. If an important detail is missing, they can do one of two things: ask customer service, or go to another webshop where they find it. Both cost money.
2. Fewer returns
Some returns happen because the product is not what the shopper expected: a different size, a different material, or not compatible. Accurate and complete attributes reduce these disappointments, and with them the shipping and handling cost of returns.
3. Working filters
Filters rely on attributes. If one product's colour is "Black", another's is "black" and a third's is "blk", shoppers only see some of the products when filtering. If the attribute is missing, the product drops out of every filtered view.
4. Better search visibility
Shoppers often search for specific attributes, such as "USB-C charger 65 W". If this information is on the product page and in the structured data, the product has a good chance of appearing for such searches. More on this: why SEO matters for your online store.
5. Accurate AI recommendations
AI assistants match the conditions in a question against product data. If an attribute is missing, the AI cannot tell whether your product fits. See our article on GEO. The same applies to your webshop's own AI chatbot: it can only answer accurately from what is in the data.
6. Shopping ads and comparison sites
Google Merchant Center and price comparison sites ask for product identifiers and characteristics, such as GTIN (barcode), brand, manufacturer part number, colour and size. With incomplete data, a product may not appear at all, or only in a limited way.
7. Legal requirements
For online contracts with consumers, the buyer must be informed about the main characteristics of the product before ordering. For some product groups, separate rules require specific information, such as the fibre composition of textiles or the energy label. It is worth having a professional check exactly what is mandatory for your products.
Practical rules
- A fixed attribute list per category. Decide which data must be filled in for every shoe, laptop or sofa. That way nothing is left out.
- Consistent values. Use predefined value lists instead of free text: "black", not sometimes "Black" and sometimes "blk".
- Consistent units. Always use the same unit, for example centimetres, and show the unit as well.
- A separate field for each attribute. Do not hide the size in the middle of the description. Filters and search engines can use separate fields.
- Variants done right. Different sizes and colours should be variants of the same product, each with its own stock and SKU.
- Check supplier data. Supplier databases are often incomplete or incorrect. Standardise them before importing.
- Learn from questions. If customer service keeps receiving the same question about a product, it probably points to a missing attribute.
How can automation and AI help?
With hundreds or thousands of products, maintaining attributes by hand is a lot of work. Automation can take over importing and standardising supplier data, and catch missing or contradictory values. AI can also extract attributes from descriptions and suggest missing data. These suggestions should be checked by a person, because a wrong attribute does more harm than a missing one. Summary
Accurate product attributes serve shoppers, search engines, AI assistants and the economics of the webshop at the same time: fewer questions, fewer returns, working filters and better visibility. Together with accurate categorisation, they are the foundation of an easily searchable webshop. If you want to clean up your product data or automate its maintenance, contact us.
