Why SEO matters for your online store: a practical guide

Online marketing · Published: · 3 min read

Search engine optimisation brings steady traffic to your webshop without paying for every click. Here is what to focus on, from categories and product pages to speed.

What is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the set of steps that help your webshop rank higher in the organic, unpaid results of Google and other search engines. People searching for a product usually pick one of the first few results. If your webshop is not there, the shopper goes to a competitor.

Why it matters especially for webshops

1. Visitors with purchase intent

Someone searching for "waterproof hiking boots size 42" is already preparing to buy. Product and category pages that rank for such specific searches bring the most valuable traffic, because visitors find exactly what they were looking for.

2. Traffic without a cost per click

Paid ads bring visitors immediately, but the traffic stops as soon as you stop paying. A well-optimised page can bring visitors for months or even years. SEO has costs too, in time and content, but they do not grow with every click.

3. Trust

Many shoppers trust organic results more than ads. A webshop that ranks well for many relevant searches also builds awareness and credibility.

4. Long-term value

What you invest today in category texts, product descriptions and technical foundations stays with you. SEO is one of the most durable marketing investments a webshop can make.

What to focus on

Technical foundations

  • Fast loading, especially on mobile. Google evaluates pages based on their mobile version, and shoppers leave slow pages too.
  • Crawlability. Provide a sitemap.xml and a correctly configured robots.txt, and make important pages reachable through internal links.
  • Handling duplicate content. Filters, sorting and variants create many near-identical URLs. Use the canonical tag to indicate the main version.
  • HTTPS and working pages. Broken links and 404 pages hurt both the shopping experience and crawling.

Category pages

Category pages are often more important to search engines than individual products, because they rank for broader searches such as "women's running shoes". Give them a unique title, a short and helpful introduction and a logical structure. Our article on accurate product categorisation covers this in detail.

Product pages

  • Your own product description. Many webshops copy the manufacturer's text word for word. If you do the same, nothing sets your page apart.
  • Descriptive title and URL. Include the brand, model and the most important feature.
  • Accurate attributes. Size, material, compatibility: shoppers search for these. See our article on accurate product attributes.
  • Structured data. With schema.org Product markup, price, availability and ratings can appear directly in the search results.
  • Good images with alt text. Image search can bring traffic as well.

Content

A blog or buying guide reaches people who are still researching, for example "which robot vacuum works best with pets". If the article is helpful and links to relevant products, a reader can become a customer.

Common mistakes

  1. Empty category pages, or ones with a single sentence.
  2. Copied manufacturer descriptions identical across many webshops.
  3. The same page title on every page.
  4. Discontinued products returning 404 errors without a redirect.
  5. Slow, unoptimised images.
  6. Filters generating thousands of indexable, nearly identical pages.

How long until you see results?

SEO is not instant. Indexing new or changed pages takes from a few days to a few weeks, and stable rankings often take months. Be careful with anyone selling this work with promised rankings and short deadlines. No provider can guarantee a Google ranking.

SEO and GEO

Search no longer happens only in the classic results list. More and more people ask AI assistants, which build their answers partly on the same well-structured, accurate content. We cover this in our article on GEO.

Summary

SEO is one of the most durable traffic sources for a webshop: it brings visitors with purchase intent, without a cost per click. Its foundations are a fast, crawlable site, well-structured categories and accurate, unique product data. Analysing traffic and purchases shows which pages deliver results.
