More and more people ask AI assistants what to buy. GEO helps make sure these answers mention your webshop and products accurately.
What is GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimisation) means optimising for search tools and assistants built on generative AI, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini or the AI overviews in Google Search. Instead of ten blue links, they give a summarised answer that names a few sources, brands or products.
The goal is the same as with SEO: shoppers should find your webshop. The difference is that you are not trying to move up a results list. You want the AI to recognise your site as a reliable source, interpret it correctly and quote it accurately in its answer.
Why does this matter for a webshop?
1. Shoppers ask different questions
More people now ask questions like: "Which quiet blender under 600 W would you recommend for a small kitchen, under 80 euros?" The AI answers by suggesting a few specific products or webshops. If your product data is incomplete, the AI cannot tell whether your product fits, and recommends something else instead.
2. Fewer clicks, more pre-qualified visitors
When an AI overview already answers the question, many people do not click further. Those who do arrive based on a recommendation are often close to a decision.
3. Inaccuracy causes damage
If an AI associates an outdated price, wrong delivery terms or incorrect product features with your webshop, it leads to disappointed customers and unnecessary support requests. Clear, machine-readable data reduces this risk.
What makes a webshop GEO-friendly?
Clear, verifiable facts
AI systems work best with specific, clearly separated statements. Instead of "premium quality", describe the actual difference: material, size, performance, warranty period, delivery time.
Structured data
Schema.org markup (Product, Offer, Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList) provides price, availability, brand, company details and frequently asked questions in a machine-readable form. It is useful for classic SEO too, so the two efforts largely overlap.
Accurate categories and attributes
When a product is in the right category and its attributes are filled in consistently, the AI can match it precisely to the conditions in a question. Our articles on categorisation and product attributes cover this in detail.
Question-and-answer content
FAQ sections, buying guides and comparisons answer exactly the questions people ask AI assistants. Write briefly and directly. Let the first sentence give the answer, then add the details.
Consistent company information
Your company name, address, contact details, and delivery and return terms should be identical everywhere: in your webshop, on social media and on comparison sites. Contradictory information reduces trust, for both AI systems and shoppers.
Accessible pages
AI crawlers read your website too. Important content should be available in the HTML, not only loaded with JavaScript or embedded in images. Your robots.txt lets you decide which AI crawlers may access the site. Some websites also summarise their content for language models in an llms.txt file. This is still a proposal rather than an accepted standard, but it takes little effort to create.
What to know about GEO
- It cannot be guaranteed. AI systems are closed and change quickly, so no provider can promise a guaranteed appearance.
- It is harder to measure. Unlike classic search, there is no exact ranking. Some traffic from AI interfaces does show up in analytics among referring sites, though.
- It does not replace SEO. Many AI systems rely on reliable pages that rank well in search engines. Good SEO is therefore the foundation of GEO as well.
Summary
GEO is about making AI assistants understand and recommend your webshop accurately. This takes no tricks, just organised, verifiable and machine-readable information: accurate product data, structured data, clear answers and consistent company details. All of this helps shoppers too. If you want your webshop to be prepared for this, contact us.
