Why accurate product categorisation matters

A well-structured category system helps shoppers find products quickly and helps search engines understand your webshop. Practical rules and common mistakes.

Categories are the map of your webshop

In a shop, customers find their way by the signs: drinks, bakery, household goods. In a webshop, categories play this role. If a product is in the wrong place, or the categories are illogical, the shopper cannot find what they are looking for, even though it is on the shelf.

Why does accurate categorisation matter?

1. Shoppers find products faster

Many visitors do not use the search box but click through the menu. Every unnecessary click or dead end increases the chance that they give up. Logical categories mean a shorter path to the basket.

2. Better search engine rankings

Category pages rank for broad, high-traffic searches such as "kids' bike 20 inch". If a category covers that product range precisely and has a unique introduction, it has a good chance of appearing for these searches. A well-organised category tree also strengthens internal linking and breadcrumbs. More on this: why SEO matters for your online store.

3. AI assistants understand it better

AI-based search tools and chatbots also use the category to interpret what a product is and which questions it is relevant to. Poorly categorised products are less likely to be recommended. See our article on GEO.

4. Working filters and comparison

Filters such as size, colour or power usually appear per category. If similar products are in one place, the filters make sense. If they are scattered, shoppers never see the full range at once.

5. More accurate analytics

Categories show which product ranges bring revenue, where returns are high and where purchases stall. With disorganised categories, these reports are inaccurate as well.

6. Ads and comparison sites

Google Merchant Center, shopping ads and price comparison sites also ask for the product category. Setting it up accurately once makes exporting product data simpler too.

Practical rules

  1. Name categories in the shopper's language. Use the words shoppers search for, not internal warehouse names.
  2. No more than three levels. Shoppers get lost in a category tree that is too deep. Most products should be reachable in two or three clicks.
  3. Avoid near-empty and overcrowded categories. A category with two products suggests a poor range, while one with hundreds is unmanageable without filters.
  4. One main category per product. If a product appears in several places, choose the primary one and point the canonical tag to it for search engines.
  5. Use filters instead of categories where possible. Colour or size is usually a filter, not a separate category. This avoids many near-identical pages.
  6. Give every category its own introduction. A few sentences about what shoppers will find there and how to choose.
  7. Review regularly. When a new product group arrives, at the change of season or after a clearance sale, check for empty or outdated categories.

Common mistakes

  • An "Other" category that gradually collects a quarter of all products.
  • The same product range under two different names, in two separate categories.
  • Categories only the shop owner understands, such as "New supplier 2026".
  • Removed categories returning an error page without a redirect.
  • A seasonal sale set up as a category, when it should be a label or filter.

How can automation and AI help?

With a large number of products, manual categorisation is slow and error-prone. AI can suggest a category based on a product's name, description and attributes, and flag products that look misclassified. The final decision should stay with a person, but checking becomes much faster. Read more on our process automation page.

Summary

Accurate categorisation is not paperwork but one of the foundations of a webshop: shoppers find things faster, search engines and AI understand the range better, and filters and analytics work reliably. Together with categories, accurate product attributes make up the other half of easily searchable product data. If you need help designing your category system, get in touch.
